I höst återvänder K.Dot till Sverige.
Med tanke på hans position idag och bidrag till kulturen historiskt, har Snoop Doggs ord fortfarande en hel del tyngd. Och när det kommer till hiphop från västkusten så kan han sin sak efter 30 år i gamet. Nu väljer han att hylla sin kollega Kendrick Lamar och hans nya album “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers”.
“I love it. I get a chance to stand back and watch the youngsters do what they do. I mean, I did my thing with it for 20-something years as far as being the king of the West Coast, gave the crown to Kendrick Lamar — I didn’t give it to him; actually, he took it, but I had to take it off my head and give it to him”, säger han i ett avsnitt av Logan Pauls podcast “Impaulsive”.
“And he’s been running wild with it and the music that’s been coming out from the West has been very, very good. It’s international, it’s not just regional, it’s not local no more; it’s global. So when I go across the world and I hear music from the West Coast, that makes me feel good to know that it’s constantly growing and it’s constantly being effective.”
När han frågads specifikt om det nya albumet “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers” svarade Snoop:
“Fucking love it. Well-thought-out. You know, when you take your time like that, that’s what you get. You notice he don’t come out every blue moon; he come out when he get ready and he makes sure he’s calculated with his thought process, with his visuals, his sound.
Kendrick is the sort of artist that is a part of the production. You can’t just send him a beat and say, ‘I wanna be on your album.’ He has to be in there with you, telling you how to make the music go, changing notes, where it’s stopping, where it’s breaking — he’s a part of the full process.”
Och Snoop Dogg är inte ensam om att uppskatta “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers”. I mitten av maj gick Eminem ut och kallade albumet “fucking ridiculous” och menade att han saknade ord för att beskriva skivan. Lupe Fiasco, Earl Sweatshirt, Lil Durk, Tyler, The Creator och Kodak Black (som medverkar på flera ställen på skivan) finns bland de övriga som hyllat albumet som debuterade på förstaplatsen på Billboard 200. Det gjorde också honom till den sjunde artisten någonsin att ha fyra låtar samtidigt på Top 10.
Vad gäller Kendrick och Snoop specifikt så är respekten i allra högsta grad ömsesidig. K.Dot har tidigare lyft “Doggystyle” (1993) som en av influenserna bakom hans egna stil och sätt att ta sig an album.
“I’m definitely influenced by that album. The structure, the cohesiveness, the skits, the flow, the melodies Snoop kicked, the raw raps — there wouldn’t be a Kendrick Lamar without Doggystyle. Albums that last that long have their own sound. It was nothing duplicated, that’s why it stood out. It was that G-Funk”, sa han redan 2013 i en intervju med XXL.
Just Snoop Dogg – tillsammans med västkustikonerna Dr. Dre, The Game och Kurupt – var den som passade vidare facklan offentligt till Kendrick i L.A i augusti 2011, kort efter att rapparen släppt “Section.80”. Fyra år senare gästade Snoop “To Pimp A Butterfly” och låten “Institutionalized”.
För svenska fans kom en otroligt glädjande nyhet häromveckan, då det stod klart att Kendrick Lamar besöker Sverige på “THE BIG STEPPERS TOUR” som startar under sommaren och kommer till Norden i oktober månad. Vad gäller Snoop Dogg så är han högaktuell med ett kommande debutalbum med supergruppen Mount Westmore.
