Stavhopparen Mondo Duplantis tar ett världsrekord per tävling verkar det som. Nu tar han dessutom emot priset som Laureus World Sportsman of the Year. På en gala i Madrid samlades några av de största atleterna i världen för årets ärofyllda Laureus World Sports Awards.
Mondo är fortfarande bara 25 år gammal och har redan blivit nominerad till priset tre gånger, varav detta är första gången han vunnit. Andra gången en svensk vinner priset, första var Annika Sörenstam 2004.
“I am incredibly honoured to have won my first Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award in the sporting capital of Madrid and to have the great Usain Bolt pay tribute to me, who I follow as the second track and field athlete to win this award”, sa Mondo när han tog emot priset från förra årets vinnare Novak Djokovic.
“The fact that these awards are voted on by the 69 world-class athletes of the Laureus World Sports Academy elevates them to another level. These are athletes who know the dedication and commitment that lies behind sporting successes; they have set the mark that athletes like me strive for. To be recognised by them is truly something special.”
