Strax innan jul fälldes den 30-årige rapparen Tory Lanez i domstol för att ha skjutit sin rapkollega Megan Thee Stallion vid en händelse som utspelade sig 2020. Domstolen i Los Angeles fällde rapparen på samtliga tre åtalspunkter; överfall med halvautomatiskt vapen, innehav av ett laddat och oregistrerat skjutvapen i ett fordon samt grov vårdslös avlossning av skjutvapen.
Nu står det klart att Tory Lanez får 10 års fängelse, enligt CNN som citerar LA County District Attorney Office. Åklagaren läste upp ett uttalande av Megan Thee Stallion på en presskonferens:
“Every day I think of others across the world who are victims of violence and survive. It is truly the most powerless feeling, especially when you question whether the justice system can truly protect you. Fortunately, the district attorney’s office fought for me. I’m incredibly grateful to them and the jury for the attention to the evidence and siding with the truth. But if it can happen to me, imagine those who lack the resources and support systems to help them…”
Tory Lanez tog också till orda i rättssalen och pratade om sin relation till Megan Thee Stallion under ett flertal minuter. Där uttryckte han också, för första gången, ånger kring vad som faktiskt hände under natten då han öppnade eld mot sin “vän”.
Law & Crime-reportern Meghann Cuniff citerar:
“Tory spoke for several minutes. He said he still cares about Megan. He called her ‘someone I still care for dearly to this day’ regardless of what she may think of him. He said ‘the victim’s my friend.’ He talked about bonding with her over the loss of their mothers.”
“‘We both lost our mothers. We would sit there and drink, and drink until we got numb,’ Tory Lanez said of Megan Thee Stallion. About the shooting: ‘I said some very immature things that I shouldn’t have said. I revealed some secrets I shouldn’t have revealed,’ Lanez said.”
Straffet för Tory Lanez skulle först ha förkunnats av en domare redan i januari, men datumet har flyttats fram flera gånger sedan dess. Så sent som i måndags skulle straffet ha fastställts men sköts senare upp till igår tisdag, amerikansk tid. Åklagaren yrkade på 13 års fängelse och utvisning. Försvaret å sin sida försökte i slutskedet få ett reducerat straff med hänsyn till Tory Lanez “alkoholmissbruk och barndomstrauma” och föreslog rehabilitering istället för fängelsestraff. Så blev dock inte fallet, alltså.
I samband med förhandlingarna under måndagen gav Megan Thee Stallion ett kompromisslöst uttalande kring Lanez och hur han hanterat situationen, som citerats av reportern Meghann Cuniff:
“At first, he tried to deny the shooting ever happened. Then, he attempted to place the blame on my former best friend. In his tantrum of lies, he’s blamed the system, blamed the press and, as of late, he’s using his childhood trauma to shield himself and avoid culpability. For once, the defendant must be forced to face the full consequences of his heinous actions and face justice”, säger Megan bland annat.
Tory Lanez och hans advokat väntas överklaga domen och det är i dagsläget oklart om han kommer att deporteras till sitt hemland Kanada om domen står fast.
