Det senaste året har en rad lagförslag kring låttexter i raplåtar dykt upp genom olika initiativ – både av artister och politiker. I början av året ställde sig bland andra Jay-Z, Meek Mill, Big Sean och Fat Joe bakom ett lagförslag titulerat “Rap Music on Trial” och i somras presenterade demokratiska politiker lagförslaget Restoring Artistic Protection Act, förkortat RAP. Det senare misslyckades dock att godkännas av statsförsamlingen.
Vad det verkar är det nu ett annat lagförslag som trätt i kraft. “The Decriminalizing Artistic Expression Act” skrevs i fredags under av Kaliforniens guvernör Gavin Newsom, vilket gör delstaten till den första att förbjuda raptexter och musikvideos som bevismaterial, enligt Variety. Förslaget ska ha röstats igenom enhälligt och vid undertecknandet närvarade bland andra Meek Mill, Killer Mike, Too $hort, Ty Dolla $ign, E-40 och YG virtuellt.

The Recording Academys VD, Harvey Mason Jr., säger vidare:
“Today we celebrate an important victory for music creators in the state of California. Silencing any genre or form of artistic expression is a violation against all music people. The history that’s been made in California today will help pave the way forward in the fight to protect creative freedom nationwide.
We extend our gratitude to Assemblymember Jones-Sawyer for his leadership on this issue and to Governor Newsom for recognizing the importance of protecting artistry and signing the Decriminalizing Artistic Expression Act into law.”
Det finns dock ett litet kryphål. Åklagare får använda texter om de kan bevisa att de är direkt relevanta för utredningen och inte medverkar till att “inject racial bias into the proceedings”.
