Yasiin Bey är inte ett superstort fan av Drake, även om just den åsiktsfrågan känns lite daterad. Hur som helst valde rapveteranen att gå i fällan när han fick frågan vad han tycker om Drakes musik under en intervju med podcasten “The Cutting Room Floor”.
Den specifika frågan löd “är Drake hiphop?”, varpå Yasiin Bey (efter en stunds tvivel) svarade:
“Drake is pop to me. In the sense, like, if I was in Target in Houston and I heard a Drake song… It feels like a lot of his music is compatible with shopping.”
Han tillade: “Or, you know, shopping with an edge in certain instances.”
Han valde sedan att löpa hela linan ut och sarkastiskt dra sin tes vidare.
“So many products! So many SKUS! Look at all these SKUs! I love this mall. Look at this place! I mean, look at this place! They have everything! Everything’s here. Oh, this is great. This is the new Drake, you hear it? It’s great.”
Han tycktes sedan insinuera att Drakes era kan vara över inom kort.
“What happens when this thing collapses? What happens when the columns start buckling? Are we not in some early stage of that at this present hour? Are we seeing the collapse of an empire? Buying and selling, where’s the message that I can use? You know, what’s in it for your audience apart from banging the pom-poms?”
Drake har än så länge inte reagerat på Beys kommentarer, men det lär inte dröja länge då han allt som oftast ser till att nypa tillbaka när någon kritiserar honom. Så även förra året, där han också gjorde det tydligt att han kanske inte är jätteimponerad av rapparen som tidigare kallade sig Mos Def.
Efter att etablerade poeter fått recensera hans poesibok “Titles Ruin Everything” för Complex, skickade han ett privat meddelande till mediet och bad dom istället att låta “the baddest Instagram girls in the world review my poetry book, not the head of the Mos Def fan club… Thanks.” Något som Complex också gjorde.
