Will Smith har hållit en låg profil när det kommer till galor och tacktal sedan förra årets incident på Oscarsgalan när han slog Chris Rock i ansiktet. Men igår kväll ändrades det. Under onsdagskvällens African American Film Critics Association Awards var Will Smith på plats för att ta emot en Beacon Award för hans roll i ”Emancipation” och höll för första gången ett offentligt tacktal sedan förra årets kontrovers. 

Charmaine Bingwa, Will Smiths medskådespelare i ”Emancipation”, och galans medgrundare Gil L. Robertson välkomnade Will och regissör Antoine Fuqua upp på scenen tidigt under kvällen. Efter Antoines tal, där han tackade galan, Apple TV+ och filmens produktionsteam, tog Will över mikrofonen för att själv hålla ett tal. Han inledde med att ”Emancipation” var hans tuffaste film någonsin. Han sa: 

“Emancipation was the individual most difficult film of my entire career. It was all outdoors, that is true. It was the second day of shooting and 110 degrees… I was in a scene with one of the white actors. The actor decided to ad lib. So we’re doing the scene. I did my line. He did his line. And then — ad lib — he spit in the middle of my chest”,

Han fortsatte: 

“The actor felt that the ad lib had gone well. So we do take two. I do my line. He does his line — and spits in the middle of my chest again… In the distance, I hear a voice. And Antoine says, ‘Hey, let’s do a take without the spit.’ And in that moment, I knew that God was real”.

Will avslutade talet med att tacka produktionen, filmteamet och Apple.

“I want to thank Gil and AAFCA. I want to thank all of you in this room for doing what you do, keeping our stories alive. I want to thank Apple, because the budget was one thing. And then the budget was another thing. And then the budget was another thing. And Apple never flinched. It was the first time I had heard from a studio that the story was more important than how much it costs to get it done… They make iPhones. They can do it”.

I år firar African American Film Critics Association Awards 20-årsjubileum. Under kvällen prisades filmerna “The Woman King”, “The Inspection”, “Nanny” och “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Andra personer som hyllades under kvällen var kompositören Michael Abels för mottagandet av en Innovator Award, ”Wakanda Forever”-produktionsdesignern Hanna Beachler för hennes mottagande av en Building Change Award och ”Wakanda Forever”-producenten Nate Moore för hans mottagande av en Ashley Boone Award.
