Chris Rock öppnade 2016 års Oscarsgala med en monolog om #OscarsSoWhite, som grundar sig i att inga svarta skådespelare blev nominerade till något pris. Den 88:e Oscarsgalan började med ett montage som visade höjdpunkter från filmåret som gått, och efter att Chris Rock gått på scen så sa han direkt – ”Man, I counted at least 15 black people on that montage”.
Chris Rock blev utsedd till att leda galan redan i oktober, långt innan nomineringarna offentliggjordes, och många tyckte att han skulle hoppa av i protest mot att inga svarta blev nominerade för andra året i rad. Han själv tvekade dock aldrig på ställa upp, och skämtade även om det i sin monolog:
“Well, I’m here at the Academy Awards, otherwise known as the White People Choice Awards. If they nominated hosts, I wouldn’t even get this job,”
“This is the wildest, craziest Oscars to ever host. You have all this controversy. I though about quitting, but I realized they’re gonna have the Oscars anyway. The last thing I need is to lose another job to Kevin Hart.”
