Inför hiphopens 50-årsjubileum senare i år släppte Billboard och Vibe Magazine en lista på de 50 bästa rapparna någonsin. En lista som väckte en hel del reaktioner. En av dem som tyckte att Billboard och Vibe hade misslyckats i sin rankning var Melle Mel (nummer 48 på listan). I en intervju med The Art of the Dialogue i söndags sa den legendariske “The Message”-rapparen att Kendrick Lamar och Eminem (rankade 2 respektive 5) inte borde ha något med toppen av listan att göra.
“Nobody wants to rap like Kendrick Lamar. Nobody wants to rap like Eminem. A lot of people wanted to rap, like Pac and Biggie”, säger han i intervjun.
Melle Mel fortsatte med att säga att anledningen till att Eminem rankas så högt har med hans hudfärg att göra:
“If Eminem was another n*gga like all the rest of us, would he be Top 5 on that list when a n*gga that could rhyme just as good as him is 35?”, frågar han sig och fortsätter:
“Ain’t none of that shit hard to figure out. Eminem gets a top spot because he’s white.”
Uttalandet fick 50 Cent att reagera, som under söndagen delade ett (numera raderat) inlägg på Instagram där han skrev:
“There was more money selling dope than being in Hip Hop when Melle Mel was popping, the culture has grown so much. I am not sure if it would be what it is today with out artist like Eminem. Shit I am not sure I would be who I am with out him but you know it is competitive so n*ggas gonna hate. LOL fuck outta here! We sucker free.”
Andra rappare som är med på listan har också reagerat på ordningen. Lil Wayne (nummer 7 på listan) sa i en intervju med Apple Musics Zane Lowe att han borde ha toppat listan.
“I will tell you that I am a muthafucking one. Everybody whose names you named, they also know I’m number one. Go ask ’em. They know what it is.”
