Filmen går nu att se via Netflix.
De senaste åren har filmer och dokumentärer som “The Hate U Give” och “When They See Us” framgångsrikt visat upp de livshotande effekter som polisbrutalitet och rasism medför. I den kommande filmen “Two Distans Strangers”, med rapparen Joey Bada$$ i huvudrollen, kolliderar denna verklighet med Black Lives Matter i en tankeväckande berättelse.
Filmen handlar om tecknaren Carter James (Joey Bada$$), som vaknar upp bredvid en kvinna efter en av hans bästa kvällar i livet. Men när han rör sig hemåt för att ta hand om sin hund stöter han av misstag ihop med en man som går på gatan och plötsligt blir han överfallen av en polis. Efter den dödliga utgången vaknar han återigen upp i sängen bredvid kvinnan och dagen startar om på nytt. Han inser att han måste göra något åt polismannen (Andrew Howard), som uppenbarligen är ute efter honom.
I mars kom även nyheten att filmen nominerats till 2021 års Oscarsgala. Regissören Travon Free reflekterade nyligen över filmens nominering i en ny intervju via Complex:
“It would be a tremendous honor to be the first Black, live-action, short Oscar winner. I think it’s indicative of how much more work needs to be done. The fact that in the almost, I believe, the categories, almost as old as the Oscars itself, that there’s only been four of us, and I know there’s a lot more than four Black filmmakers who are making quality films. I firmly believe no matter what happens, we made an incredible film that’s had an incredible impact. When you look at the quotes that we’ve gotten from some of the biggest filmmakers and Black activists in the world, from Bong Joon-ho to Harry Belafonte to Jeffrey Katzenberg, to Geoffrey Fletcher, who was the first Black Academy Award winner for adapting a screenplay. And we still find ourselves in the ‘first’ realm after 93 years of Oscars, we’re still having firsts.”
Filmen har premiär på Netflix 9 april 2021.
