Den omtyckta Bay Area-rapparen Zumbi från gruppen Zion I gick i fredags bort, 49 år gammal. Ingen dödsorsak avslöjades då, men i ett uttalande av rapparens familj går att läsa:
“It is with utter disbelief and great sadness that the Gaines family shares the news of the passing of Steve ‘Zumbi’ Gaines on Friday, August 13, 2021. Gaines, 49 and the MC of the critically acclaimed Hip Hop group Zion I, passed away at Alta Bates Hospital today in the early morning from unknown causes.”
“The family requests privacy in this very challenging time while they await further details. Steve is survived by three sons, his mother and his brother. He was working on a Zion I reunion tour with longtime producer and collaborator, Amp Live, to honor the legacy of their musical endeavors for their fans.”
HipHopDX rapporterade att rapparen skrivits ut och in från sjukhuset de senaste veckorna efter att ha testat positivt för covid-19. Zumbis kollega, DJ True Justice, menar att rapparen drabbades av en “allvarlig astmaattack” och dog på sjukhuset. Nu kommer dock uppgifter från San Fransisco Chronicle om att polisen i Berkeley utreder hans död som ett eventuellt mord, alternativt dråp.
Polisen Melanie Turner säger att man fick in flera samtal från sjukhuset strax efter klockan fem på morgonen, där det påstods att en patient var i slagsmål med sjuksköterskor och säkerhetsvakter. I ett uttalande säger hon att “officers started handcuffing the involved person and determined that he needed immediate medical assistance.”
Efter incidenten ska patienten, som alltså tros vara Zumbi, ha förklarats död på plats trots flera återupplivningsförsök från personalen. DJ True Justice verkar dock skeptisk till versionen och menar att hans vän absolut inte var en våldsam person.
“Steve was not a violent person; he never sought violence; he never condoned violence. However, I know as a person, I know Steve is very firm in his beliefs”, säger han till tidningen.
