I en videointervju med Time Magazine ger Vince Staples sin syn 90-talets musik. Han säger bland annat att han aldrig lyssnat på NSYNC, Backstreet Boys eller Spice Girls.

“The ’90s get a lot of credit, I don’t really know why. Biggie and 2 Pac, those are the staples of the ’90s, I think that’s why they get the golden era credit.”

Han fortsatte sedan att kommentera den tidiga 2000-tals eran med Kanye West, 50 Cent och Jay Z i spetsen. Favoritrapparen på den tiden är dock något oväntat; Bow Wow.

“The first song I remember listening to is Lil Bow Wow’s ‘Bounce with Me.’ Lil Bow Wow is one of my favorite rappers ever, you can never take that from me.”

I klippet reflekterar Staples även kring autencitet och ”att vara äkta”.

“What’s real? Real meaning urban and aggressive, is that what we mean by real? Your life is your life, no matter what that is I think that should be what your music is about, your outlook on life.”
