Bättre sent än aldrig, brukar det heta. Nu har Tupac Shakur fått en gata uppkallad efter sig i Oakland, Kalifornien. 27 år efter hans tragiska bortgång.
En ceremoni hölls under fredagen med familj, vänner och fans på MacArthur Boulevard mellan Van Buren och Grand Avenue. Trots att han som bekant föddes i New York och bodde ett par år i Baltimore, var det just på västkusten som 2Pac fick sin start inom musiken. Först med gruppen Digital Underground och sedan som soloartist, där han spelade in sitt första album i just Oakland.
“On these streets, you can’t mention my brother’s name if you are still taking a Black man’s life. It’s a moment that I know my brother would be proud of. Establishing love and peace in the Oakland community especially mattered to him. Being able to represent safety to his people mattered to him”, sa rapparens syster Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur vid ceremonin.
På plats närvarade också bland annat radiopersonligheten Sway Calloway som tillade:
“He’s a leader, he’s an innovator, his duality, his fight for the people. He stood 10 toes down, and the fight that he fought for us resonated all around the globe.”
Även Bay Area-kollegan E-40, som själv fick en gata uppkallad efter sig i området nyligen, uttalade sig om 2Pac och sa:
“He spoke up for our people, for our culture. He is the greatest rapper to ever did it, man. He did so much in so little time.”
Allt medan 2Pacs minne hedras i Oakland pågår också den uppmärksammade mordrättegången som efter 27 år fick ett genombrott när Duane “Keefe D” Davis greps häromveckan. I förra veckan rapporterades att den forne gängmedlemmen nekat till mordanklagelserna.
