Royce Da 5’9” har de senaste året börjat ägna sig allt mer åt filantropi. I somras fick han en styrelseroll i Eminems stiftelse Marshall Mathers Foundation där hans syfte är att motarbeta sociala orättvisor och nu startar han sin egen stiftelse. The Ryan Montgomery Foundation ska fokusera på att motverka de stigman som finns kring att söka mentalvård samt att hjälpa de som är i behov av det.
Som en del av sitt första initiativ har veteranen teamat upp med The National Alliance On Mental Illness och CNS Healthcare, som båda har sin bas i rapparens hemstad Detroit.
– As a person of color who has seen a therapist for many years now, I know how important it is to talk about your issues with an unbiased mental health care professional. My people often think seeking a therapist is taboo. It’s my mission to dispel that myth and give light to those who believe there is no way out of the darkness, säger Royce i ett pressmeddelande.
Royce har tidigare haft personliga problem med framförallt alkoholmissbruk, men firade nyligen åtta år som nykter. Nu drar han sitt strå still stacken genom att samarbeta med NAMI, vars verkställande direktör Kevin Fischer säger:
– NAMI Michigan is excited to collaborate with international recording artist Royce Da 5’9. His transparency and celebrity, combined with his passion to raise mental health awareness, specifically in communities of color, will have an incredible impact on our mission to eliminate the stigma associated with seeking mental healthcare, which we consider the leading barrier to the early diagnoses and treatment that leads to better outcomes. His advocacy is needed and sincerely appreciated.
Stiftelsen och dess samarbete väntas presenteras offentligt den 14:e oktober. Nyligen annonserade Royce också en ny podcast tillsammans med Lupe Fiasco.
