Basisten Gene Simmons i det legendariska rockbandet KISS har tidigare gått till attack mot att Grandmaster Flash och RUN D.M.C. valts in i ”Rock and Roll Hall of Fame”. Han har genom åren även kommit med många kontroversiella uttalanden om bland annat kvinnors roll i samhället. Att han nu uttalar sig negativt om hiphopen är alltså inte helt oväntat. I en intervju med Rolling Stone så säger Simmons:

“I am looking forward to the death of rap,” he said. “I’m looking forward to music coming back to lyrics and melody, instead of just talking. A song, as far as I’m concerned, is by definition lyric and melody … or just melody.”

Han fick sedan chansen att ta tillbaka sitt uttalande, men gjorde istället precis tvärtom:

“Rap will die…Next year, 10 years from now, at some point, and then something else will come along. And all that is good and healthy.”

På frågan om han över huvud taget gillar genren så svarade han:

“I don’t have the cultural background to appreciate being a gangster, of course that’s not what it’s all about, but that’s where it comes from. That’s the heart and soul of it. It came from the streets.”
