Det har gått 35 år sedan Masta Ace debuterade med sitt legendariska Juice Crew på Marley Marl-låten “The Symphony” med Kool G Rap, Craig G och Big Daddy Kane. Brooklyn-rapparen har nu fyllt 56 år och visar inga tecken på att slå av på takten vad gäller rap och turnerande. I början av 2023 besökte han Stockholm med sin ständiga följeslagare sedan tio år tillbaka – den Toronto-fostrade men New York-baserade producenten Marco Polo. Det har gått fem år sedan de båda släppte det gemensamma albumprojektet “A Breukelen Story” med gästinhopp av Styles P, Elzhi och Smif-N-Wessun.
Efter att ha släppt singeln “Certified” i höstas, med hiskligt talangfulla gruppen Coast Contra, gavs nya singeln “Life Music” ut i november med gästande eMC-rapparen Stricklin samt Speech från Arrested Development. I ett pressmeddelande berättar Masta Ace om hur låten kom till:
“I wrote ‘Life Music’ while riding on a local bus to town in Barbados. Listening to that beat and looking at the masked faces of the working class passengers sitting around me combined with seeing the many impoverished residents in the neighborhoods the bus rolled through, I was inspired to write a song that celebrated life. There are so many songs on the charts that glorify and celebrate death, I felt it was important to rail against those themes which we have somewhat normalized in our culture. I’m challenging the listener to embrace life and reject the negative messages we are constantly being fed in music.”
Masta Ace och Marco Polo ger ut nya albumet “Richmond Hill” den 26 januari 2024 med gäster som Inspectah Deck, Wordsworth, Stricklin och Che Noir. Skivan släpps även på vinyl via Fat Beats.
