Pharrell beskriver syftet:

“In assembling this project, I asked some of the most qualified people I know in every field—from Angela Davis to Tyler, the Creator, to Representative Barbara Lee—to talk with us, and with one another, about the way forward. I wanted to convey a vision of a future filled with the artists, creators and entrepreneurs who can fulfill the promise of this country’s principles.”

I musikvideon presenteras och hyllas svarta entreprenörer och deras företagande: Issa Rae, Nipsey Hussle, Tyler, The Creator, Robert Hartwell, Six Sev, TyAnthony Davis [Grundare av Vox Collegiate Junior High], Vincent Williams [Grundare av Honey’s Kettle], Iddris Sandu, Beatrice Dixon [Grundare av Honey’s Pot], Arthell & Darnell Isom [Grundarna av D’ART Shtajio], Neighbors SkateShop, Alrick Augustine, Denise Woodard [Grundaren av Partake Cookies], Chace Infinite [Grundare av Harun Coffee Shop], Chef Alisa [Grundare av My Two Cents], Debbie Allen [Grundare av Tribe Midwifery], Angela Richardson [Grundare av PUR Home], Miss Bennett Fitness, Black and Mobile, Trill Paws Dog Accessories, Third Vault Yarns, samt “The First Black Valedictorian of Princeton” Nicholas Johnson. I TIME-featuren säger Pharrell vidare:

“The intention for a song was all about how tough it is to be an entrepreneur in our country to begin with. Especially as someone of color, there’s a lot of systemic disadvantages and purposeful blockages. How can you get a fire started, or even the hope of an ember to start a fire, when you’re starting at disadvantages with regards to health care, education, and representation?”

I låten hörs Jay-Z bland annat lägga raderna:

“Black Twitter, what’s that? When Jack gets paid, do you? For every one Gucci, support two FUBU’s.”

The New American Revolution is a special project by Pharrell Williams, featuring a curation of essays and conversations examining America's racist past—and the potential for a more equitable future. "America was founded on a dream of a land where all men were created equal, that contained the promise of liberty and justice for all. But all has never meant Black people," writes @pharrell. "Like most Black Americans, I understand that all exists only in the augmented-reality goggles available to shareholders, power brokers and those lucky enough to get in on the initial public offering. But the ongoing protests for equity and accountability that have overtaken cities across the nation have made me feel something new that I can only describe with one word: American."
