Rostrum Records släpper dokumentären “Top Shelf 1988” – med Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane och MC Lyte med flera

Rostrum Records firar sitt 20-årsjubileum och hiphopens 50-årsjubileum med en ny dokumentär titulerad “Top Shelf 1988”, namngiven efter labens första projekt.

I den korta dokumentären hör vi journalisten och rapparen Rob Markman göra berättarrösten. Vi får också se tidigare opublicerade intervjuer och klipp som har med skapandet av samlingsprojektet “Top Shelf 1988” att göra. I filmen hörs musik från bland andra Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane, Craig G, MC Lyte, Special Ed, Doug E. Fresh, Jungle Brothers, Grand Puba, Masta Ace, Dres (Black Sheep), Smooth B (Nice & Smooth), Grandmaster Caz & Melle Mel och Chubb Rock.

En del av dokumentären berör ett upplopp som skedde i Tompkins Square Park i augusti 1988, nära Top Shelfs studio. Senare upptäcktes det att studion hade plundrats på allt, inklusive masters. Det skulle sedan ta flera år att hitta dem igen och färdigställa projektet.
