J. Cole överraskningssläppte förra veckan nya albumet “KOD”, en skiva som minst sagt skapat debatt i flera läger. Vissa hyllar Cole medan andra dissar skivan och dess budskap. Klart är att skivan varit en succé eftersom den slog rekord både på Spotify och Apple Music i USA med 36,7 miljoner respektive and 64,5 miljoner streams på en dag.
Nu kommenterar North Carolina-MC:n mottagandet av skivan och karriären fram till idag, i en intervju med Vulture. Skivans röda tråd handlar om hur droger i olika former normaliserats från både samhälle och nöjesvärlden.
“We live in a society where all this drug use is normalized, it’s the norm, it’s okay, it’s fucking encouraged, it’s fucking promoted. You turn on the TV — you feeling down? Of course I’m feeling down, I’m a fucking human being. Try this. Whatever this thing is. Like, nah, how about you actually feel sad and figure out what the fuck it is that got you feeling sad, so you can work on that?”
I en musikbransch där många rappare frekvent nämner droger fick Cole omedelbart mothugg av både Lil Pump och Smokepurrp. Cole tar dock lugnt på kritiken och menar att det är talande för hur rapmusik blivit en allt mer kommersialiserad.
“If you exclude the top three rappers in the game, the most popping rappers all are exaggerated versions of black stereotypes. Extremely tatted up. Colorful hair. Flamboyant. Brand names. It’s caricatures, and still the dominant representation of black people, on the most popular entertainment format for black people, period.”
Cole berättar även om tider av depression, något som blivit bättre sedan han gift sig och skaffat barn:
“I didn’t like how I felt about my life. I’d been depressed for like three years. And I realized I was putting too much importance on what other people thought about me. Also, my mom going through her shit had a traumatic impact on me, and I never had a chance to process that shit. I just put my head down. I wasn’t having an honest conversation with myself.”
