Under natten till måndag gick Grammy Awards 2019 av stapeln i Staples Center i Los Angeles, där hiphopgenren inför galan tagit stor plats. Kendrick Lamar var nominerad i åtta kategorier, Drake i sju och Cardi B i fem. Childish Gambino dock, blev den stora vinnaren då han och Ludwig Göransson skrev historia när man för första gången vann Record of the Year med en hiphoplåt. Med “This Is America” vann man även Best Music Video. “Black Panther” vann fick även pris för Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media. Bästa rapalbum vanns av Cardi B och hennes “Invasion of Privacy”.

I andra nämnvärda händelser blev det oavgjort mellan Futures “King’s Dead” och Anderson Paaks “Bubblin” i kategorin Best Rap Performance. Detta var dock inte första, och knappast sista, gången det händer. Enligt Parade har det blivit 21 oavgjorda resultat sedan 1959.

En annan som i vanlig ordning vann pris var Drake, då hans låt “God’s Plan” vann Best Rap Song. Men när han började komma in på känsligt territorium i sitt tacktal bröts det till reklam. Han sa bland annat:

“We play an opinion based sport, not a factual based sport. You already won if you have people singing your songs word for word, if they’re singing in your hometown. You’re already winning, you don’t need this right here.”

Just Drake, Kendrick Lamar och Childish Gambino hade redan nobbat att uppträda på Grammys, troligen på grund av deras oförmåga att på ett rättvist sätt representera hiphop på galan, vilket länge varit ett hett ämne.
