Mats Nileskär startade programmet P3 Soul redan 1978 och har sedan dess varit känd för sina kvalitativa gärningar som programledare och är inte bara känd för sina intervjuer och sin kunskap här i Sverige utan har även lovordats av hiphop och soul-intresserade artister och fans utanför Sveriges gränser.

En snackis angående Kendrick Lamars senaste album “To Pimp A Butterfly” har varit 2Pac-intervjun på slutspåret “Mortal Man” där Kendrick går in i rollen som intervjuare. Den faktiska intervjun står dock Mats Nileskär för. 1994 porträtterade han nämligen Tupac Shakur två år innan rapparens död.

Questlove från The Roots hyllar Mats Nileskär via Instagram med följande ord:

Being both a mega fan of recording artists AND the journalists who cover them is a slippery slope. I listened to #MortalMan obsessively this morn tryna to dissect how Kdot crafted that #2pac interview. Because of the clarity and the candidness of it I was like “obviously Pac was talking to a european journalist (they have a way of disarming you and building a system of trust because they treat you like an artist, NOT product and pre Internet you tend to feel more comfortable in expressing yourself as opposed to keeping guard up cause you know your peers are around to read your words) don’t get me wrong, there are a few US journalists that instantly get respect, but you REALLY drop your guard overseas. That said I knew right off the bat (& guessed correctly) that somehow soul music historian #MatsNileskar @P3Soul had something to do with that 2pac interview. I knew nothing of his illustrious history in 40 years of journalism. But I swear he has some of the BEST interviews in the history of soul, jazz, & hip hop culture. Dunno if his stuff is archived, but there are mega gems out there. Respect. #TPAB

Mats Nileskär prisades nyligen för sina gärningar som programledare och journalist med Kerstin M Lundberg-priset med följande motivering: ”För att han under decennier varit Sveriges främste och mest kärleksfulle introduktör av soul, hiphop och r’n’b.”
